< field trip #1 :: Star-Telegram >

We started the school year off right... with a field trip today before the official first day of school on Monday. We went with our local homeschool group to see exactly how they make our local newspaper, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.

A few random things that we learned ~
  • Each roll of this paper is over 9 miles long and weighs as much as a VW bug
  • They print 400,000 Sunday papers each week
  • All kids love the comics!
  • The biggest "insert" days are Thanksgiving day and Christmas day
  • They use robots with cute names (like Newsy, Electra and Inkenstein) to move the paper rolls
  • Subscribers have gone way down with the "invent" of the computer... "but not everyone has a computer" (thank you, Sweet Mr. Tour Guide, for the chuckle)
  • Wearing white capris to a printing facility?? Not a good idea.

We are looking forward to participating in more activities with our homeschool group and making some new friends!

Misty ~ now if I can just keep up the pace for the rest of the year, I'll be good to go... ;-)
