< from trike to twenty >

With spring upon us and the beautiful weather making us itch for the outside, we headed to the bike shop to get a new ride for Jacob. You see, he's been cruising on the same little tricycle for a few years now. On the first slightly-warm day this year, he asked if he could ride his bike. He climbed on, ready for a little ride... but couldn't go very far due to his knees hitting the handlebars.

I took him to MOAB where he quickly picked out a souped up tricycle. =) I gently guided him over to the big boy bikes, and he fell in love with a blue 16" bike with training wheels. He zoomed in circles inside the store, and we were convinced that he had found his new bike. After talking to one of the employees, he suggested that we would be better off buying the next size up... the ginormous looking 20 INCH BIKE. That thing is bigger than HE is, I thought to myself. But he explained that the 16" is really made for ages 3-6, and since Jacob will be 6 in a few short months, we would get more use and bang for our buck by going ahead and making the move to the bigger bike. I thought for sure we would end up returning it the next day, but we headed to the paths behind the Discovery Center to give it a test drive.

And do you know what???

He did great! He was a little nervous and going super slow at first, but once he built up his confidence we had to jog to keep up with him! He's very much into estimating his miles per hour, and I'm guessing that he got up to about 6 mph. If I could just get him to settle into a steady 4 mph I might be able to get some meaningful exercise while he rides alongside me. =)

WHOA Jacob! Super cool. Maybe we can do some bike riding when we're in TN?! Ben and Leah would love that.

Buy that kid a speedometer already!! Of course, he may be paying too much attention to the numbers to ride then! They grow up too fast!
