< squeakity squeak >

Today was "Nursery Rhyme Dress Up Day" at Jacob's school. The class has been working on a nursery rhyme unit since school began 15 days ago, and they've been diligently preparing for this day. Each child got to choose the character they wanted to portray, and then they had to act out the nursery rhyme in front of class.

Jacob chose to be the mouse from Hickory Dickory Dock. Really, are you surprised??? It involves his beloved numbers AND a clock! He told us that he was going to say "squeakity squeakity squeak" in his best mouse voice. Wish I had a sound clip of him saying that, it was totally cute!

I struggled to come up with a mouse costume, as you can plainly see. We did a gray hooded sweatshirt for the body, and pink balloons for the ears. Yes, I know they look hokey, but all the kids at school LOVED them and kept touching them. Then I drew on a nose and whiskers with a washable marker, stuffed a slice of cheese in his pocket, added some grey ribbon on his behind for a tail and called it done. In retrospect, I can see the genius in those parents who might have persuaded their child to choose Jack and Jill, or Jack Be Nimble... no special costume required!

Parents did not get to come in to see this performance... except for the 3 parents who are responsible for taking pictures/video of the class - and that includes yours truly!! I got to stay for the entire thing... it was really super cute. They let the children volunteer to go when they were ready. After what seemed like an eternity, it was finally Jacob's turn –

Hickory Dickory Dock,
the mouse ran up the clock
,
the clock struck one
Oh no, the time is all wrong on my clock!
Mrs. Burgess to the rescue: "Okay, I'll set it to one o'clock for you"

Jacob: "No, you have to set it to 12:55 and I'll tick it to 1:00 pm"

Mrs. Burgess: "Okay, it's at 12:55 now... you can finish"

Jacob: "Actually, that's the wrong time. You set it to 11:55... it needs to be one hour later at 12:55."

Mrs. Burgess: "Oh, well you're right. I DID set it for 11:55 instead of 12:55 - how silly of me! Jacob you are so smart, I don't know how your head fits into that hood of yours..."

Jacob: "OH yeah, I know" - looks like we need to work on being humble

He proceeded to start from the beginning and did a fabulous job of reciting his nursery rhyme.

The End!

Way to go Jacob and great job on the costume Mom! I'm pretty sure Mrs. Burgess is going to learn quickly about that little head of his.

How stinkin' cute is that costume. I LOVE the balloons. Very creative if I do say so myself. Glad it went well. =)

That turned out so much better than I imagined it could! Not that I thought Jacob incapable, I just couldn't imagine the acting it out part. Great job on the costume. And hey - you don't have to figure out what to do for Halloween!
